Still at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. We have moved around and slept at four other campsites in the refuge. We look for sites that have lots of bird activity because Dave has been recording bird song and sending it to Nate who builds soundscapes. The dark night sky is phenomenal—the stars are so bright and seem so close as well. We hear coyotes calling in the evenings and the mornings. Saw deer who were watching us as we did Chi Gong movements in camp. Also saw a good sized herd of deer as we drove around. Saw one lone pronghorn, but no javelinas yet. This reserve is specifically protecting the Masked Bobwhite Quail. I believe hunting of the big mammals is allowed here, but no quail hunting at all. Long stretches of the big black border wall can be seen from here. So ugly. Border patrol checkpoints are numerous and border patrol vehicles are commonplace on the roads.
On Wednesday we drove over to I-19 to visit the mission ruins at Tumacacori. Also checked out the village of Tubac, which is a gentrified artsy community. Had delish Mexican Food further south in Nogales, and showered and did laundry at a Love’s truck stop. Big day out! Haha
Today the strong winds are back, 23 mph winds with gusts to 43 mph. We stay close to camp, hard to walk in this wind. The birds are having a hard time, too. I occasionally see one trying to fly against the wind, but getting nowhere.
