Whidbey Island
Whidbey Island can be reached by bridge from the Washington state mainland. There is basically one road that runs the length of the island, which is no wider than 5 miles across at any point; much narrower in some places. Saturday was a beautiful day, and we toured the island beginning in Anacortes, thru Oak Harbor, Coupeville, Langley, and finally Clinton, then we turned around. One beach had lots of beautiful kites flying. There were four different locations where you could take a ferry either back to Seattle, over to Port Townsend, or further out to the San Juan Islands and on from there to Victoria, B.C.
All the ferry hopping takes some advance research, which we hadn’t done this time, so we will do that on another trip. I was a bit disappointed in Widbey Island. I was expecting “island charm”, and there was a little of that in Langley and Coupeville, but mostly it is modern and looks like anywhere else in the US. There’s also a big Navy presence there that I didn’t anticipate. We liked Anacortes the best—clearly a port/fishing town, a working class kind of place—and had a delicious dinner there at Nonna Luisa’s Italian Restaurant.
Still feeling crummy from the shots. It’s been 12 days since we got them.
