Leaving Elko for the Ruby Marshes
Got up early at the motel and went to do laundry. Fueled the van. Can't find any detailed paper maps for sale!! It is driving Dave crazy. He doesn't think my Benchmark Maps books are useful.
Headed out from Wells, NV south on Hwy 93, then to State Route 229 for 15 miles, then south on State Route 767 and County Road 788 for 30 miles to South Ruby Campground in Ruby Valley, NV. It's spitting rain and threatening snow, feels like 35 degrees.
Made it to South Ruby Campground. Sweater weather right now and every so often it sprinkles on us. I was trying to dry out a few pairs of jeans that didn't get dry at the laundromat, but had to grab them up quick before they got completely drenched.
We have been cleaning and sorting out the van. Each day we get better at finding "permanent" locations for things. Unfortunately we had several things we should have thrown in a dumpster in Elko, but we forgot, so they are still with us. We were so excited to find a good spot to dispose of our toilet trash that we forgot the rest. It's a pretty big pile so will make a big difference when we toss them. It's excess pillows, towels, an empty fire extinguisher and a sleeping pad that has already formed a "bubble" that can't be remedied.
This campground is a beautiful spot. With our America the Beautiful Senior Pass we get a 50% discount on camping fees (as well as free entry into National Parks) so our cost here is $8 per night. We have paid so far for 3 nights. Might stay longer if we like it. We have a view down below of the Ruby Marshes. The campground is a mix of juniper and Pinon pine. Very nice and also uncrowded. No cell service in the area.
Tomorrow we will explore the marshes. Apparently it's a world class fly fishing destination. Who knew? An interpretive trail for Fort Ruby is also nearby.
