Thursday, June 23, 2022. Sheldon Wildlife Refuge
Already on the road at 7:15 am because we haven't had breakfast yet. Did'nt want to set up camp in the super powdery valley floor. Headed for Virgin Valley Campground in Sheldon Wildlife Refuge today. Supposed to be free solar showers there. Fueled in Denio, NV, because next services are 81 miles away. Paid $7.05 per gallon for gas. Highest price so far.
Got to the Virgin Valley Campground in Sheldon Wildlife Refuge, but we were disappointed. It was basically a parking lot with some RVs and picnic tables. Very little shade. The showers were nothing that we were willing to use, so we drove on to a different camp area described as "primitive" called Big Spring Reservoir. It was essentially a dry lake 5 miles off the main road with a large graveled parking area, 2 camp fire rings, and a vault toilet. No water. We are staying here at the moment. Set up the stove and made tea. Ate some ham, hummus, and crackers. Then because it was near noon, with no shade on either side of the van, we went inside. Dave took a nap and I read.
The wind here has picked up a lot. Helps keep us cool, but it's getting quite strong. Hope it doesn't become a dust storm from the dry lake.
Evening was much better in this campground. The van produced shade and we cooked and cleaned. I walked up and down the road a little, about 1/2 mile, then we took many photos of the sunset, which was amazing. Just goes to show you that even the starkest, seemingly ugliest places contain beauty if you look.
Listening to the coyotes calling as I write this.
